Apple iPhone 17 Air Debuts as eSIM-Only Worldwide
Apple has unveiled the iPhone 17 Air, its thinnest iPhone ever, and confirmed that the new device will be eSIM-only worldwide.
At just 5.5mm thick, the iPhone 17 Air represents Apple’s boldest move yet in slimming down its devices. However, this new design comes at the cost of removing the physical SIM tray entirely.
Apple first began shifting toward eSIM-only models in the U.S. with the iPhone 14 back in 2022. Now, the company is making that the global standard, aligning all markets under a single connectivity option.
During the keynote, Apple emphasized the benefits of eSIM:
“We pioneered eSIM years ago, and now it’s an industry standard, and compared to that decades-old piece of plastic, eSIM is so much easier to use, has better security, and saves precious space inside the iPhone. eSIM is also great for travel.”
Why eSIM?
- More secure than physical SIM cards, reducing risks of theft and cloning.
- Convenient for travel, letting users easily add new carriers digitally.
- Space-saving, giving Apple more room for a bigger battery and advanced components in a slimmer body.
The removal of the SIM tray also helps Apple push forward its minimalist design philosophy, following similar transitions such as dropping the headphone jack in 2016 and the Lightning port for USB-C in 2023.
With the iPhone 17 Air, Apple is signaling the end of the physical SIM era — and setting the stage for what could be the future of all smartphones.
The iPhone 17 Air joins the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max in Apple’s 2025 lineup, offering users a lightweight alternative with cutting-edge features.
