WhatsApp Now Lets You Translate Messages
WhatsApp has rolled out a new message translation feature for both iOS and Android users. This update allows users to translate messages into their preferred language directly within chats, groups, and Channel updates.

How WhatsApp Message Translation Works
- Translate on Demand: Long-press any message, tap Translate, and select your desired language.
- Automatic Translation: Android users can enable automatic translation for an entire chat thread, so all future incoming messages appear translated.
- Privacy Preserved: Translations occur locally on your device. WhatsApp cannot see your messages, keeping end-to-end encryption intact.
“With more than 3 billion users in over 180 countries, we’re always working to keep our users closely connected, no matter where they are in the world,” WhatsApp said.
Supported Languages
Android: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic
iOS: Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese
Note: It’s currently unknown when translations will be available on WhatsApp Web or Windows/Mac apps.
Why This Feature Matters
Language barriers are one of the biggest challenges in global communication. WhatsApp’s new translation feature makes it easier to:
- Communicate with friends and family across languages
- Understand messages in workgroups or communities
- Engage with content from Channels without missing key updates
This update comes shortly after Apple launched live translation in Messages, highlighting the growing importance of real-time multilingual communication in messaging apps.
