Mukesh Ambani Partners with Google & Meta to Build India’s AI Backbone
Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man and chairman of Reliance Industries, has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish the country’s AI backbone. The initiative, announced during Reliance’s 48th annual general meeting (AGM), marks the launch of a new subsidiary — Reliance Intelligence — that will focus on building large-scale AI infrastructure for India.
Reliance Intelligence: A National AI Vision
Reliance Intelligence will serve as a hub for top researchers, engineers, and product developers to accelerate AI innovation. According to Ambani, the company’s mission is to transform research into practical applications that can solve challenges across sectors such as finance, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, and government services.
Partnership with Google Cloud
To jumpstart its AI vision, Reliance has partnered with Google Cloud to build a dedicated AI cloud region in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This state-of-the-art infrastructure will support businesses, developers, and government agencies with scalable AI tools and services.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai expressed strong support, calling the partnership “only the beginning” of advanced AI innovation between Reliance and Google Cloud.
Reliance–Meta AI Joint Venture
Reliance also announced a joint venture with Meta, investing ₹8.55 billion (approximately $100 million) under a 70:30 ownership split. This collaboration will provide enterprise AI solutions, including a Llama-based AI platform-as-a-service, enabling businesses to deploy generative AI across customer service, IT, finance, and sales.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted that the partnership will bring Meta’s Llama models into real-world enterprise use cases in India and global markets.
Future Plans: IPO & OpenAI Talks
Ambani revealed that Jio Platforms is preparing for a much-anticipated IPO in early 2026. Additionally, Reliance is reportedly in discussions with OpenAI to bring more AI services to India, following OpenAI’s expansion plans in New Delhi.
AI Beyond Infrastructure
Beyond partnerships, Reliance showcased several AI-powered consumer innovations:
- JioFrames Smart Glasses – AI-based eyewear competing with Snap Spectacles and Ray-Ban Meta.
- JioHotstar AI Features – AI voice assistant “Riya” and real-time translation in Indian languages.
- JioAICloud – Consumer cloud offering 100GB free storage, already used by over 40 million users.
Why It Matters
Ambani’s move positions Reliance at the center of India’s AI race as the nation looks to compete with U.S. and China’s dominance in artificial intelligence. By leveraging partnerships with Google, Meta, Microsoft, and potentially OpenAI, Reliance aims to create an AI ecosystem that empowers Indian enterprises and consumers alike.
