Judge Rules Google’s Ad Tech Business Is a Monopoly

Landmark decision could lead to a major breakup of Google’s advertising empire.

Google is under fire once again. The tech giant—owned by Alphabet—has lost another major antitrust case. On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema ruled that Google operates an illegal monopoly in the ad tech sector.

This ruling is a pivotal moment in the ongoing fight to regulate Big Tech. It stems from a 2023 antitrust lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and 17 U.S. states, accusing Google of monopolizing key tools used by advertisers and publishers across the digital advertising ecosystem.

During a three-week trial in September, the DOJ argued that Google unfairly tied its ad server—the technology publishers use to manage ads—with its ad exchange, where ads are bought and sold. The DOJ claimed Google used exclusive contracts and anti-competitive practices to force publishers and advertisers into relying solely on its services.

Key Findings from the Case:

  • Google’s ad server holds an estimated 87% share of the U.S. market and 91% globally.
  • The company has allegedly acquired competitors to stifle innovation and limit choice.
  • Internal communications suggest Google employees were encouraged to delete messages that might reveal anti-competitive conduct.

This is the second time in just eight months that a court has declared Google a monopoly. In a separate case, a judge previously found the company monopolized the online search market, even raising the possibility that Google may have to divest its Chrome browser.

What Happens Next?

With this latest ruling, Google’s ad tech division—which contributes roughly 12% to its total revenue—could face a forced breakup. The tech industry is watching closely, as this decision could reshape the future of digital advertising.

The ruling reinforces growing calls for stronger antitrust enforcement and sets a powerful precedent. If Google is ordered to split its ad tech operations, it could open the market for more competition, innovation, and transparency in the online advertising space.
