Check Your Bank Account Facebook Privacy Settlement Payments

Facebook Users Are Finally Getting Settlement Payments

If you had an active Facebook account during the class period and filed a claim by the 2023 deadline, you may spot a deposit in your bank, PayPal, or Venmo account this week.

On Monday, recipients began receiving payouts from Facebook’s historic $725 million privacy settlement, which stems from the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal that exposed the personal data of up to 87 million users.

How Much Are the Payments?

The amounts vary depending on how long you maintained an active Facebook account. Each claimant was awarded points for every month of account activity during the settlement period.

  • Average payment: about $29.43
  • Maximum payout: about $38.36
  • Example: Some PayPal users reported receiving around $37 in their accounts.

How Payments Are Being Sent

According to the official settlement website, only approved claimants will receive payments. The distribution will continue over the next 10 weeks.

Payment methods include:

  • Direct deposit
  • PayPal
  • Venmo
  • Zelle
  • Virtual prepaid MasterCard
  • Paper checks by mail

You’ll also receive an email notification a few days before your payment is issued, based on the method you selected when filing your claim.

What If You Didn’t File a Claim?

Unfortunately, if you missed the August 2023 filing deadline, you’re not eligible to receive money from this settlement.

If you’re unsure whether your claim was approved, you can email the Settlement Administrator at [email protected] (be sure to include your Claim ID).

Why This Settlement Matters

The lawsuit stems from allegations that Facebook improperly shared user data with third parties, including Cambridge Analytica, a UK consulting firm linked to the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Although Meta (Facebook’s parent company) denied wrongdoing, it agreed to the settlement in 2023, stating that the deal was “in the best interest of our community and shareholders.”
